Becoming Gay: Deleuze, Feminism and Queer Theory

English abstract

From the perspective of Queer Theory, Norbert Finzsch offers theoretical reflections on a practice of "becoming", that could lead to a dissolution of hegemonic masculinities. Finzsch tries to put a practice that allows intermediate positions and alternatives in the place of practices, that assumes fixed male and female bodies and identities as well as heterosexual and homosexual orientations. The former practices would then be able to attack hegemonic masculinities on an individual as well group subversive basis.

The foundations of his reflections are the common works of Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) and Félix Guattari (1930-1992) – two important French Poststructuralists. Finzsch’s critique that is indebted to Deleuze in particular, is mainly directed at positions of Judith Butler (born 1956, Professor for Rhetorics and Philosophy), who contributed very important work on de-essentializing the concept of gender in the 1990s. Additionally, his article aims for a re-materialization of the concepts of body, gender and sexuality that have been demanded and brought forward by a growing number of thinkers in the last years.
