The line "We….are what we are!" is a quote taken from the famous Lila Lied (Lilac Song) recorded in 1921, which evolved into the first hymn of the German homosexual emancipation movement. This article takes a closer look at recordings dealing with homosexuality in the first third of the 20th century. The songs are historically evaluated and the author analyses the messages behind the songs: from discrimination to emancipation, from serious to gay.
