"Serving the cause"
The meaning of illustrations in homosexual women's magazines.
An examination across decades

English abstract

The article deals with important content-related aspects of context-oriented graphical material in homosexual women's magazines published in Germany in the 1920s, 50s and 70s. Schader and Regn take a look at graphic art, illustrations and the role played by authorship and anonymity with regard to their productivity and subconscious capacities. This is exemplified by the examination of questions relating to the dialogue between illustrations and text and the positioning as well as the weighting of content. Within the timeframe provided by the material, the authors discuss relations between traditions, ideals and questions about the constitution of female homosexuality. So, the authors want to make a statement for handling illustrations with more ease in historical research. This also applies to the dichotomies "wish" and "reality" / "conscious" and "subconscious" as constructive elements within the practices of representation.
