Gays, Lesbians and Sports: A Taboo

English abstract

The preoccupation with everyday life of sexual minorities, especially with their recreational activities, is of lower significance in present-day, German written scientific essays concerning the history of homosexuality. The field of sports is missing completely. A little bit is known about the importance of sports in the biographies of homosexual men and women living today, but nearly nothing of those living in the past. Up to now studies about the development of the situation of gays and lesbians in the German sports movement do not exist. With the rise of the homo sports movement in the last years also in Germany, the question about the significance of sports in the history of gay men and women urges clarification through historical gender studies. The author takes stock of what is known about this topic up to now. Due to the immense research deficit, which he realised while preparing an exhibition on this subject, he suggests and demands historical studies about the many-sided facets of homosexuality and sports.
